Etsy Listing Photo Size (2026): Photos, Banner & Shop Icon

By Hieu Dinh

Etsy Listing Photo Size: The Quick Answer

The recommended Etsy listing photo size is at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. In practice, export at:

  • 3000 × 2250 px for a 4:3 landscape photo, or
  • 3000 × 3000 px for a square photo,
  • as an sRGB JPEG, ideally around 1MB or less.

That's large enough for Etsy's zoom view, small enough to upload quickly, and sharp on high-resolution screens. Etsy accepts JPG, PNG, and GIF, and lets you add up to 20 photos and a video per listing (the photo limit went up from 10 in August 2025).

Below is the full cheat sheet, followed by how the thumbnail crop works and a fast way to prepare a whole shoot on a Mac.

Etsy adjusts some of these from time to time and doesn't publish all of them in one place. If the upload screen in Shop Manager shows a different number, trust the upload screen.

Why 2000 Pixels Matters

Etsy shows listing photos in several places: small in search results, medium on the listing page, and full-screen when a buyer clicks to zoom. The 2000 px minimum exists for the zoom view. Below that, a buyer zooming in on stitching, glaze, or a print's texture sees soft, smeary detail, which is exactly what they were trying to check.

Going far above 3000 px doesn't help. Etsy resizes and recompresses every upload, so a 6000 × 4000 px, 15MB photo straight off a camera ends up looking the same as a well-made 3000 px export. It just takes longer to upload and gives Etsy's compressor more work.

The sweet spot: shoot at full resolution, crop with room to spare, and export at 2000–3000 px on the shortest side.

Aspect Ratio and the Thumbnail Crop

Your first photo becomes the thumbnail buyers see in search, in the Etsy app, on your shop page, and in Etsy Ads. Etsy crops those thumbnails from the centre of the image, and the crop shape varies by where it appears. When you upload the first photo, Etsy lets you adjust the thumbnail framing; use it.

Practical rules:

  • Put the product in the middle with generous space on every side, so any crop keeps it whole.
  • Use one ratio per listing. Mixing square and landscape photos makes the gallery jump around as buyers swipe.
  • Square is the safe default. It survives every thumbnail crop and looks right in the app. 4:3 landscape is the traditional Etsy shape and works well for wide items like prints and rugs.
  • Don't add borders or text near the edges. They're the first thing a crop cuts.

File Size: Aim for Around 1MB

Pixel dimensions control how sharp a photo looks. File size controls how fast it uploads and loads. The two are separate, and you can keep the first while cutting the second.

A 3000 × 3000 px JPEG at quality 80–85 is usually 600KB to 1.2MB and looks identical to the 8MB original at any size a buyer will see. Saving at quality 100 roughly triples the file with no visible gain. If you list a lot, smaller files also make bulk uploads and listing edits noticeably faster on a home connection.

Format choice:

  • JPEG for product photos. Best size-to-quality ratio for photographic images.
  • PNG only for graphics with flat colour or text (digital downloads, printable previews). A PNG photo is several times larger than the same JPEG. See JPEG vs PNG for when each wins.
  • GIF only if you genuinely need animation, and keep it short.

If your phone shoots HEIC (iPhones do by default), convert to JPEG before uploading from a computer. Batch converting HEIC to JPG covers the quickest ways on a Mac.

Also use sRGB colour. iPhones and many cameras capture in a wider colour space, and colours can shift once the image passes through Etsy's processing and lands on a buyer's screen. Exporting to sRGB keeps your colours predictable.

Remove Location Data Before Uploading

Photos from phones usually include EXIF metadata, and that can include GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. For sellers who shoot at home, that's your home address embedded in the file. Don't rely on any marketplace to strip it for you: remove it before upload. How to remove EXIF data shows how on Mac, iPhone, and Windows.

How to Prepare Etsy Photos on a Mac

One or two photos: Preview

  1. Open the photo in Preview.
  2. Tools → Adjust Size. Set the shorter side to 2000–3000 px, keep "Scale proportionally" checked.
  3. File → Export, choose JPEG, and set quality to around 80%. Check the file size shown at the bottom of the dialog.

A whole shoot: batch it

Product shoots come in batches: 10 products × 8 angles is 80 photos per session. Doing them one at a time in Preview gets old fast. You can select many photos in Preview and resize them together, but you still have to export and check each size. Our guide to batch resizing images on Mac covers Preview, Automator, and Terminal options.

Compresto handles the compression side in one pass: drop a folder of photos in, pick Target file size and type 1 MB, and it exports JPEGs that land at or under that cap, warning you about any file that can't get there. If your originals are far larger than 3000 px, add a 50% downscale in the same run. It works locally on your Mac, so unreleased product photos never leave your computer. The same app also shrinks listing videos under Etsy's 100MB cap.

Etsy Listing Video Specs

Etsy listing videos play silently on loop, so treat them as moving photos:

  • Length: 5–15 seconds
  • File size: up to 100MB
  • Resolution: 1080p or higher
  • Sound: removed on Etsy, so don't rely on narration

A 15-second 4K clip from a recent phone can exceed 100MB. Trimming and re-encoding to 1080p HEVC or H.264 brings it well under the limit with no visible loss on a listing page.

  • Big banner: design at 3360 × 840 px and keep logos and text inside the centre third. Mobile screens crop the sides.
  • Mini banner: 1200 × 160 px is very short. Use it for a shop name or a single line of text, not a product collage.
  • Shop icon: 500 × 500 px, simple shapes, high contrast. It's displayed tiny and often as a circle, so test it at thumbnail size before uploading.

For banners with text or a logo, export as PNG if JPEG artefacts show around the lettering, then compress the PNG. Compress images without losing quality explains how to keep text crisp while cutting file size.

FAQ

What is the best Etsy listing photo size?

At least 2000 px on the shortest side. Export at 3000 × 2250 px (4:3) or 3000 × 3000 px (square), sRGB JPEG, around 1MB.

What aspect ratio should Etsy listing photos be?

4:3 or square. Square is safest for thumbnails. Use one ratio for every photo in a listing.

How many photos can you put on an Etsy listing?

Up to 20 photos plus a video, since August 2025.

What size is the Etsy shop banner?

Big banner: 3360 × 840 px (minimum 1200 × 300). Mini banner: 1200 × 160 px.

What size should an Etsy shop icon be?

500 × 500 px, square.

Why do my Etsy photos look blurry?

Usually the image is under 2000 px, was cropped too tightly, or was soft to begin with. A bigger file size won't fix it; more pixels and better focus will.

Bottom Line

The Etsy listing photo size that works everywhere is 2000–3000 px on the shortest side, square or 4:3, sRGB JPEG around 1MB, with the product centred for the thumbnail crop. Get the pixels right, keep the files light, and strip location data before you upload.
