Apple Compressor: What It Does, When You Need It, and When You Don't
Apple Compressor
Apple Compressor has an unhelpfully literal name. People searching for it fall into two groups that want quite different things: professional editors looking for delivery specifications and batch pipelines, and people who just want their video files to be smaller.
Compressor serves the first group very well. For the second group it is an expensive, indirect way to accomplish something simple — and the app's own design makes that clear the moment you open it.
This guide covers what Compressor genuinely does, the settings that matter, and how to tell which group you are in.
What Compressor Actually Is
Compressor is a professional transcoding and delivery application, sold separately from Final Cut Pro at US$49.99 as a one-time Mac App Store purchase (no subscription).
Its purpose is not "make files smaller". Its purpose is getting media into a precisely specified deliverable format, repeatedly and at volume. The distinction shapes everything about how it works.
Its principal capabilities:
Custom export settings for Final Cut Pro. Build a setting in Compressor and it appears in Final Cut Pro's Share menu. For a team that has to deliver to the same specification every time, this is the app's most-used feature by a wide margin.
Batch transcoding. Queue hundreds of files, apply settings, walk away. Jobs, batches and destinations are first-class concepts.
Delivery package creation. iTunes Store packages, IMF packages, MXF output, and the compliance checks those specifications require. This is genuinely specialist territory that few other tools handle.
Broad format support. HDR (HDR10, Dolby Vision), HEVC, ProRes across its variants, 360° video with correct metadata, closed captions as embedded tracks or sidecar files.
Distributed encoding. Split a transcode across multiple Macs on a network. Useful for facilities with idle hardware, irrelevant to individuals.
How It Works With Final Cut Pro
The integration runs in both directions, which is the main reason to own it.
Sending from Final Cut Pro: select a project or clip and choose File > Send to Compressor. Your timeline arrives as a job, ready for settings to be applied. For iTunes Store delivery specifically, File > Send iTMS Package to Compressor packages all video, audio and caption roles together.
Presets appearing in Final Cut Pro: save a custom setting to the Compressor Presets destination and it shows up in Final Cut Pro's Share menu alongside Apple's built-ins. This is what makes Compressor worth its price to working editors — you configure a client's delivery specification once, and every subsequent export is two clicks with no opportunity to mis-set a parameter.

The Settings That Matter
Compressor's interface presents encoding settings in the left sidebar, with an inspector for detailed configuration. The parameters worth understanding:
Codec choice
H.264 for maximum compatibility, HEVC for roughly 40% smaller files at equivalent quality, ProRes for editing and archival masters.
Apple's marketing claim that HEVC produces files "up to 40 percent smaller than H.264" is broadly consistent with independent testing at typical delivery bitrates, though the real figure varies with content — high-motion footage benefits less than static scenes. Rate control
- Single-pass VBR — fastest, adequate for most work
- Multi-pass VBR — the encoder analyses the file first, then allocates bits where they are needed. Slower, better quality at the same size
- CBR — constant bitrate, required by some broadcast specifications, wasteful otherwise
Multi-pass is worth the time on final deliverables and pointless on review copies.
Resolution and frame rate
Compressor will happily convert both. Generally you should not. Frame rate conversion between non-integer multiples (25 → 30 fps, say) requires either dropping frames or interpolating them, and both are visible on motion. Change frame rate only when a delivery specification demands it, and use Automatic for frame rate otherwise so the source is preserved.
Video quality and key frames
The quality slider maps to encoder effort. Key frame interval matters more than most people realise for streaming: shorter intervals allow finer seeking and faster adaptive-bitrate switching, at some cost in efficiency. Automatic is correct unless a platform specifies otherwise.
When Compressor Is the Right Tool
Buy it if you recognise yourself here:
- You deliver to specifications. Broadcast, streaming platforms, festivals, or clients with a written delivery document.
- You export the same format repeatedly. Custom presets in the Final Cut Pro Share menu eliminate an entire category of error.
- You batch large volumes. Hundreds of files, one setting, unattended.
- You need iTunes Store or IMF packages. Very little else does this properly.
- You work with HDR, 360°, or MXF. Compressor's handling of these is mature.
- You have spare Macs. Distributed encoding is real and it works.
At $49.99 with no subscription, for anyone in those categories it pays for itself almost immediately.
When It Is the Wrong Tool
Compressor is a poor fit if what you want is simply smaller files.
The friction is structural, not cosmetic. Compressor is organised around jobs, batches, settings and destinations — the vocabulary of a delivery pipeline. To compress one video you create a job, select or build a setting, choose a destination, add it to the batch, and start the batch. That flow is exactly right when you are processing 300 files to a broadcast specification. It is disproportionate when you have one clip that needs to fit under 25 MB for email.
More pointedly, Compressor has no target-file-size mode. You specify a bitrate and get whatever size results. Hitting a specific ceiling — Discord's limit, an email attachment cap, a CMS upload restriction — means calculating the bitrate yourself from duration, or encoding and re-encoding until you land under it. That is the single most common real-world compression task, and Compressor does not address it directly.
It also does nothing for images or PDFs. If your file-size problems span media types, it solves a fraction of them.
And it is Final Cut Pro-shaped. If you edit in Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, you lose the preset integration that justifies much of the price.
The Alternatives, Honestly
Final Cut Pro's built-in Share menu. If you already own Final Cut Pro and export standard H.264/HEVC for YouTube or Vimeo, you may not need Compressor at all. The built-in options are competent. Reach for Compressor when you outgrow them, not before.
HandBrake. Free, open source, extremely capable, and genuinely good at rate control. The interface exposes a great deal of complexity, which is either a feature or an obstacle depending on your tolerance. Our HandBrake guide covers it properly.
FFmpeg. Everything is possible; nothing is discoverable. Correct choice for scripted and automated pipelines, poor choice for interactive one-off work.
A focused compression tool. If the actual task is "make this smaller, keep it looking good, do not make me learn a delivery pipeline", a purpose-built compressor is the honest recommendation.
A Reasonable Way to Decide
Ask what problem you are solving.
"I need to deliver to a specification, repeatedly, at volume." Buy Compressor. It is well-built, reasonably priced, integrates properly with Final Cut Pro, and there is not much else that does this on macOS.
"I need my files to be smaller." You are looking for a compression tool, and Compressor's professional apparatus is overhead rather than benefit.
The two goals overlap less than the name suggests.
If You Just Want Smaller Files

Where Compressor asks you to construct a delivery pipeline, this asks how small you need the file. Different tools, different jobs, and it is worth being clear about which one you actually have.
