Resolve's Deliver page is built for professional delivery, which means its defaults lean toward quality and compatibility with post-production workflows rather than toward reasonable file sizes. Left alone, a five-minute 4K timeline can export at 20 GB.
The fix is three or four settings, and one of them — the audio codec — is responsible for a surprising share of the problem.
The Two Settings Behind Most Oversized Exports
1. Quality on "Automatic"
In the Deliver page's Video tab, the Quality control offers Automatic and Restrict to.
Automatic hands the decision to the codec. For a delivery codec like H.264 that produces a reasonable, if generous, result. For an intermediate codec — ProRes, DNxHR — it produces something close to lossless, because that is what intermediate codecs are for. They are designed to survive repeated re-encoding during editing, not to be small.
Set Quality to "Restrict to" and specify a bitrate. This is direct control over file size, and it is the single most effective change available.
Sensible starting bitrates for H.264:

2. Audio on "Linear PCM"
Easy to miss, and it matters more than people expect. Linear PCM is uncompressed audio. Stereo 48 kHz PCM runs about 1.5 Mbps — roughly 11 MB per minute, or 675 MB across an hour, for audio alone.
In the Audio tab, switch the codec to AAC at 192–320 kbps. That is transparent for essentially all content and reduces the audio component by around 90%.
Only keep PCM when the file is going into another post-production stage where the audio will be worked on further.
Codec: Matching the Format to the Destination
The Deliver page's Format and Codec pair determine everything downstream.
MP4 + H.264 — the default answer for delivery. Plays on every device, every browser, every platform. Choose this unless you have a specific reason not to.
MP4 + H.265 (HEVC) — 30–50% smaller at equivalent quality. Use when you know the playback environment supports it. On Apple Silicon, Resolve uses the hardware media engine for HEVC, so it is not meaningfully slower to export. Comparison in HEVC vs H.264.
QuickTime + ProRes — an editing and archival format, not a delivery one. Genuinely correct when handing footage to a colourist, a VFX artist or an archive; wildly oversized for sending someone a video to watch. ProRes 422 HQ at 1080p runs around 220 Mbps — roughly 20× a good H.264 delivery encode.
QuickTime + DNxHR — the Avid-ecosystem equivalent of ProRes, with the same reasoning.
The recurring mistake is exporting ProRes because it sounds like the professional choice, then wondering why the file is 40 GB. ProRes is professional for editing. For delivery it is the wrong tool.
Resolution and Frame Rate in the Deliver Page
Resolve lets you set export resolution independently of your timeline, which is useful and underused.
Editing a 4K timeline but delivering for the web? Set the Deliver page resolution to 1920×1080. Resolve downscales on export without touching your timeline or media, and pixel count drops 75% before the encoder sees a frame. Downscaled 4K also looks slightly better than natively-shot 1080p, because the downscale averages away noise.
Frame rate should generally match the timeline. Converting 60fps to 30fps on export introduces judder unless the footage was shot for it — this is a creative decision, not a compression one.

YouTube and Vimeo
- Format: MP4, Codec: H.264
- Quality: Restrict to 12,000 kb/s (1080p) / 45,000 kb/s (4K)
- Audio: AAC 320 kbps
- Resolution and frame rate: match timeline

- Resolution: 1080×1920 for vertical, 1080×1080 for square

- Audio: Linear PCM
This is the case where large files are correct. Masters exist to be re-encoded from later.
Other Settings Worth Checking
Use hardware acceleration. Under Resolve's preferences, enabling hardware encoding uses your GPU's or Apple Silicon's media engine. Exports run several times faster. The efficiency cost is small at delivery bitrates — see hardware vs software encoding.
Key frame interval. Leave on automatic unless a delivery spec requires otherwise. Forcing short intervals inflates the file.
Encoding profile. High profile for H.264 unless you are targeting genuinely old hardware. Main and Baseline are less efficient.
Two-pass / multi-pass. Available with restricted bitrates and worth enabling for long exports where size matters. It costs roughly double the export time in exchange for better bit distribution.
When the Export Is Still Too Big
Sometimes the delivery constraint is a hard number — a 500 MB upload cap, a 25 MB email limit — and juggling bitrate values in the Deliver page to hit it is guesswork.
The pragmatic move is to export once at good quality and compress to the target afterwards. That way your master stays clean and you can produce as many differently-sized versions as you need without re-rendering the timeline.
