AV1 Player: How to Play AV1 Video Files on Any Device
You download a video, open it, and get audio with a black rectangle where the picture should be. Or a green screen. Or the fan spins up and playback stutters through what should be an easy file.
The file is almost certainly fine. AV1 is a young enough codec that plenty of software still has no decoder for it, and the failure modes look alarmingly like corruption.
Here is what actually plays AV1, and how to tell whether you are decoding it the efficient way.
Why AV1 Files Fail to Play
AV1 was finalised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2018 — recent, in codec terms. H.264 has been ubiquitous since roughly 2005, which is why everything plays it.
A player needs an AV1 decoder to show you the picture. Without one you get:
- Black or green screen, audio playing normally — the container and audio track parse fine, the video track does not
- Audio only, no video window — the player skipped a track it could not identify
- "Unsupported codec" or "cannot play file" — the honest failure
- Playback that stutters with CPU pinned near 100% — a decoder exists, but it is running in software on hardware that is struggling

One useful diagnostic: AV1 usually arrives in .mkv, .webm, or .mp4 containers. The extension tells you nothing about the codec. An .mp4 that will not play may well be AV1 inside an MP4 box, which is why "but it's an MP4" is not the reassurance it sounds like.
The Players That Work
VLC — the answer on desktop
VLC Media Player is the default recommendation on Windows, macOS and Linux. It bundles dav1d, the AV1 decoder VideoLAN built specifically because the reference decoder was too slow to be practical. dav1d is fast, actively maintained, and the reason VLC handles AV1 without any codec pack.
Install it, open the file, done. No extensions, no configuration. VLC also does a great deal else — compressing video with VLC and converting to MP4 are both within its range.
Windows: add the AV1 Video Extension
If you would rather use the built-in Windows player, install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. It is free and published by Microsoft, which is worth checking — paid third-party "AV1 codec" listings exist and are unnecessary.
Once installed, AV1 plays in Media Player and other system apps that use Media Foundation. On hardware with an AV1 decoder, it will use it.
macOS: VLC or IINA, not QuickTime
QuickTime Player does not play AV1. This surprises people with new Macs, because macOS itself gained AV1 support — Apple added hardware AV1 decoding with the M3 generation, and Safari can use it. QuickTime Player specifically did not get it.
Use VLC or IINA, a native macOS player with a cleaner interface that also uses dav1d. Both work regardless of which Mac you have; on M3 and later they can hand off to the hardware decoder.
Browsers: already fine
Chrome (70+), Edge, Firefox (67+) have decoded AV1 for years. Safari joined with Safari 17 on macOS Sonoma, using hardware decode where the chip provides it.
This gives you a zero-install check: drag the file onto a Chrome or Edge tab. If it plays there, the file is fine and your media player is the problem. If it fails in the browser too, look at the file.
Phones
iPhone 15 Pro and later decode AV1 in hardware through the A17 Pro and its successors. Earlier iPhones need an app with a software decoder — VLC for iOS works.
Android devices on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Google Tensor G3, or newer decode AV1 in hardware. Older devices fall back to VLC for Android.
Software vs Hardware Decoding
This is the distinction behind "it plays, but badly."
Software decoding runs the decoder on the CPU. dav1d is impressively fast, and for 1080p on any recent machine it is fine. 4K AV1 in software is genuinely demanding — high CPU, hot laptop, and battery life measured in a couple of hours.
Hardware decoding uses a fixed-function block on the GPU or SoC built for exactly this. Dramatically lower power, no CPU load worth mentioning, and 4K plays without drama.
Hardware AV1 decode requires:

Note the dates. Hardware AV1 decoding only became common from 2021 onward, and Apple did not ship it until 2023. A perfectly capable four-year-old laptop may have no AV1 block at all — it will play AV1 in software, just inefficiently.

Diagnosing a File That Will Not Play
Work through this in order:
1. Confirm it is actually AV1. In VLC: Tools → Codec Information. The video codec line will read AV01 or AV1. On macOS, Finder's Get Info panel shows codec details for many files. If it says H.264 or HEVC, this article is not your problem — try fixing a corrupted video file.
2. Test in a browser. Drag it into Chrome or Edge. Plays there → your player lacks a decoder. Fails there → suspect the file.
3. Install VLC. This resolves the overwhelming majority of cases on desktop.
4. If it plays but stutters, you are decoding in software on hardware that cannot keep up. Check the table above. If your machine has no AV1 block and you need this file to play smoothly and repeatedly, convert it.
5. If VLC also fails, the file is likely truncated or damaged — an interrupted download is the usual cause. Re-download before assuming anything more exotic.
When to Convert AV1 to Something Else
AV1 is roughly 30% more efficient than HEVC and 50% more than H.264, so converting away from it costs real file size. Do it anyway when:
- The target device is out of your control. Smart TVs, car head units, older phones, hotel displays.
- Your editor will not import it. NLE support for AV1 remains patchy; many still want H.264 or ProRes.
- You are handing the file to someone else and cannot ask what they run.
- Battery life matters and you have no hardware decoder.
Convert to H.264 for maximum compatibility — it plays essentially everywhere, at the cost of a 30-50% larger file for equivalent quality. Convert to HEVC for a middle position: better efficiency than H.264, broad support on Apple hardware and modern TVs, though licensing and compatibility are messier.
One caveat worth stating plainly: re-encoding is lossy on lossy. Converting AV1 to H.264 decodes an already-compressed video and compresses it again with a weaker codec, so you lose a little quality on top of gaining file size. Keep the AV1 original if you have anywhere to put it.

Converting AV1 on a Mac
Once you have decided to convert, the job is straightforward: decode the AV1 stream and re-encode to H.264 or HEVC, ideally with hardware acceleration so it does not take all afternoon.
