The 15 GB Google gives you is shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and photos fill it fastest. Modern phones produce 3–6 MB per still and hundreds of megabytes per minute of 4K video, so a couple of years of ordinary use is enough to hit the ceiling.

Google's answer is Storage Saver, and it works. It is also a one-way door applied to your entire library at once, with settings you never see. Worth understanding before you click it.


What Storage Saver Actually Does

Google Photos offers two upload qualities:

Original quality — the exact file from your camera, byte for byte. Full resolution, original compression.

Storage Saver (formerly "High quality") — Google re-encodes on upload:

  • Photos above 16 megapixels are resized down to 16 MP
  • Photos below that keep their dimensions but are re-encoded at a more aggressive JPEG quality
  • Videos above 1080p are reduced to 1080p and re-encoded

The typical saving is substantial — often 50–70% depending on what your camera produces.

The important detail is that Storage Saver is not free of consequence. For a phone snapshot destined for a screen, the loss is difficult to see. For a 45 MP camera file, an image you plan to crop hard, or anything you intend to print large, you are losing real information permanently.

The other thing worth knowing: Storage Saver stopped being unlimited in June 2021. It used to sidestep your quota entirely. It no longer does — it just consumes far less of it.


Recovering Space From Photos Already Uploaded

If your library is already full of original-quality uploads, Google can convert them retroactively.

On a computer, go to photos.google.com → Settings → Manage storage → Recover storage, then choose to compress existing photos and videos.

Google processes the whole library in the background. It can take hours; you can close the tab and shut the machine down. When it finishes, the recovered space appears in your Google One quota.

Two warnings that matter more than the instructions:

It is irreversible. Your original-quality files are replaced on Google's servers. There is no undo, no grace period, no restore. If those originals exist nowhere else, they are gone.

Back up first. Use Google Takeout to download your library at original quality before running the conversion. It takes a while and produces a large archive, but it is the difference between compressing your photos and losing them.


The Case for Compressing Yourself First

Storage Saver applies one fixed policy to everything you own. Compressing locally before upload gives you three things it cannot.

Control over the trade-off. You choose the quality level, and you can be more aggressive with screenshots and casual snaps than with the photos that matter. Storage Saver treats a receipt photo and a family portrait identically.

Your originals stay yours. Compress a copy for upload and keep the untouched file on your own disk or drive. Storage Saver's problem is not that it compresses; it is that it compresses the only copy.

JPEG quality 85 is the workhorse setting. It is visually indistinguishable from quality 100 for nearly all photographic content while producing files roughly a third of the size. Above 90 you are storing information no viewer will ever perceive; below 75 artefacts start appearing in skies and skin tones.

Resolution is the larger lever for most libraries. A 48 MP phone photo viewed on a phone screen is displaying perhaps 2% of its pixels. Capping the long edge at 4000px keeps plenty of room for cropping and printing while cutting file size dramatically.

Where the Space Is Actually Going

Before compressing anything, it is worth finding out what is consuming your quota. Settings → Manage storage surfaces the categories that usually dominate:

Large photos and videos. Almost always the biggest item. A single hour of 4K phone video can exceed 10 GB — more than a decade of stills.

Screenshots. Often thousands of them, and almost all disposable. They are also uploaded at full device resolution.

Blurry photos. Google identifies these automatically. Reviewing and deleting them costs a few minutes and is pure gain.

Unsupported videos. Files Google could not process, taking up space while being unplayable.

Trash. Deleted items occupy quota for 60 days. Emptying it gives space back immediately.

A Workflow That Holds Up

  1. Back up originals locally. External drive or NAS. This is what makes everything else safe.
  2. Delete the obvious. Screenshots, blurry frames, duplicates, unsupported videos, then empty the trash.
  3. Compress before uploading, from now on. Local compression with settings you choose, keeping originals on your own storage.
  4. Set the account to Storage Saver for future uploads. Profile → Photos settings → Backup → Backup quality. This stops the problem recurring.
  5. Run Recover storage only after step 1. With originals safely backed up, retroactive conversion is a reasonable trade rather than a risk.

The ordering is the point. Almost every story about losing photos to Google Photos compression involves running step 5 without step 1.
